Learning another language is not only learning different words for the same things, but learning another way to think about things.” - Flora Lewis, American journalist

Subject Overview

At Shire Oak Academy, the purpose of study of a foreign language is to provide  students with an understanding of other cultures in the world they will live and work in. Learning a language will contribute to mutual understanding and is a lifelong skill for education, employment and leisure.

Through the listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, KS3 and KS4 students are invited to express themselves with increasing confidence, independence and creativity. From an early stage, they will analyse the similarities and differences between French and English and gradually learn how the language can be manipulated creatively. By developing their communication skills, together with appreciating the structure of the language, it will support the foundations for future study of other languages as well the development of literacy skills in the pupil’s language.

The MFL department believes that by providing students with up-to-date quality education that responds to both the understanding of the world around them and access to a capacity to express their ideas is paramount.

Students will have various experiences of foreign languages at primary. When they start in Year 7, students are introduced to the importance of languages in today’s society and learn about the cultural, historical, geographical and social aspects of French.
