Subject Overview

The overarching aim for English in the National Curriculum is to promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written word, and to develop their love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment.

Here at Shire Oak Academy, we endeavour to deliver a knowledge- rich curriculum, exposing students to a broad range of texts to challenge them to achieve their potential.

During Key Stage Three, pupils are encouraged to read widely in the Accelerated Reading Program alongside their schemes of work. We strive to challenge our pupils by covering a multitude of fiction and non-fiction texts, whilst inspiring creativity and excellence.

Our Key Stage Four curriculum (EDEXCEL) is tailored to promoting high standards of fluency in both English Language and Literature. We cover a range of texts from different genres and periods to provide a secure and grounded understanding of literary heritage. Pupils are encouraged to respond to texts, forming their own opinions and express these through both the written and spoken word.

Students with a clear passion for English can choose to study either Language (AQA) or Literature (OCR) for A-level. Both subjects are looked upon favourably by universities, should this be your son/daughter’s chosen path. Our two year courses allow students to build on their prior knowledge and develop their analytical skills while exploring contextual influences in both language and literature.
