About Us

Our History

Shire Oak School, a comprehensive secondary school, was formed in 1970 by merging Shire Oak Grammar School, opened in 1961, with Walsall Wood Secondary Modern School, which had been moved to new buildings adjoining those of the grammar school in 1966. In September 2003 we received designation as a specialist science college. In April 2011, our school became an 11 to 18 comprehensive converter academy. In October 2018, Shire Oak Academy alongside Aldridge School, Queen Mary’s Grammar School, Queen Mary’s High School and The Walsall studio School formed The Mercian Academy Trust.

Our Facilities

At Shire Oak Academy we take great pride in ensuring that we have the best available resources and facilities for our pupils to take advantage of during their educational journey.

Embracing Technology

Every classroom is equipped with a teaching computer and a state of the art, large screen interactive whiteboard. Pupils have access to a number of fully equipped IT suites and several sets of portable Chromebooks are situated across the Academy site.

Physically Challenging

Two sports halls equipped with indoor football, basketball and badminton courts. Indoor climbing walls, a fitness suite with internet enabled Matrix fitness equipment, a separate gym and spinning studio. A large grass field with facilities for athletics, football, rugby and rounders. An all weather surface equipped for tennis, football and netball.

Our Students

The academy enjoys an enviable reputation in the local area and has been oversubscribed for many years. We pride ourselves on the ‘feel’ of our academy, something on which our visitors quickly remark.  Ofsted’s inspectors described our academy’s atmosphere and environment as purposeful, stimulating and harmonious. We believe that our focus on learning and personal success can only be effective in an environment which is ordered, caring, supportive and disciplined. Staff and students work hard together to create such an environment.
